The Cherokee National Forest will soon be filling a GS-0462-5 Technician (Wildlife) position. This is a full-time, permanent position with a duty station at the Watauga Work Center in Hampton, . Although the duty station is located on the Watauga Ranger District, this is a zone position and the employee will be expected to work on the Unaka Ranger District as well. The position will require the employee to work odd hours (early mornings, late evenings) at times, and some weekends. This notification is being circulated to inform interested applicants of this opportunity. This is an Outreach in anticipation of advertising and filling a full time position. This position will be in the wildlife program, but will be expected to assist other programs as needed. Persons interested in this position should follow the outreach response directions listed at the end of this notice. When the vacancy is posted, the District will notify respondents of the advertisement and the vacancy announcement number for which to apply.

Major Duties:
➢ Serves as technician in the Wildlife and Program on the Watauga Ranger District and north zone of the Cherokee National Forest
➢ Performs a variety of routine tasks and practices relating to management programs (e.g. timber, recreation, wildlife, range, soil/water and fire/fuels management)
➢ Wildlife – completes wildlife and fish surveys, completes wildlife and fisheries habitat improvement projects including: mowing, bush hogging, prescribed burning, fish stocking, and planting. Operates equipment for a variety of wildlife projects, inputs data or data management, and builds relationships/works with cooperating agencies, partners, and volunteers.
➢ Public Education – leads or assists the development and implementation of public education programs (kid’s fishing days, school programs, naturalist rallies)
➢ Soil/Water – Assists with soil/water project improvements
➢ Timber – marks timber, assists with timber stand improvement, treats invasive species, assists with site prep treatments
➢ Recreation – performs recreation maintenance including mowing, facility and structure repair and cleaning. May perform collection officer or forest protection officer duties and assist with special events (kids fishing day)
➢ Range – Checks allotments for compliance and assists with maintenance needs
➢ Fire/Fuels – Assists with prescribed burning, monitoring and wildfire suppression
➢ Assists with marking and maintenance of boundary line
➢ Greets visitors, answers questions and provides information to inquiries
