An opportunity currently exists for a highly motivated and analytical research assistant to provide scientific and laboratory support within a large, internationally recognised research group investigating the role of the pathogenic bacterium Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis inJohne’s disease. This position is located at the Faculty of Veterinary Science’s Camden campus. The Faculty of Veterinary Science conducts research and teaching programs in farm animal health and production. A significant research initiative between Meat and Livestock Australia and the University has targeted new approaches for diagnosis and control of Johne’s disease.
In this challenging and rewarding role, you will advance study of the molecular pathogenesis of Mptb infection from initiation through to clinical disease or recovery. You will perform DNA/RNA extractions, quantitative RT-PCR, enter specimen information into the database, process and separate blood and dissect tissue specimens, perform microbiological analyses, maintain accurate laboratory records and oversee quality control and administrative duties.
A confident communicator with exceptional interpersonal skills, you will liaise frequently with key staff members. Your robust organisational ability, methodical approach and attention to detail will be imperative to prepare and store specimens, maintain accurate databases and records, and assist with the development of protocols.
To succeed you will have a degree in Biological Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science or Microbiology, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, and an understanding of biological and molecular techniques. Demonstrated professional or research experience within a molecular biology, microbiology or immunology laboratory is essential.
Suited to this role is an experienced laboratory technician who is able to work independently and as part of a dynamic and friendly team, and wishes to be involved in a worthwhile project that assists with groundbreaking veterinary research. Honours and Postgraduate research students with relevant experience are welcome to apply as well. This is a role that potentially offers a high level of autonomy and may be conducted in a full-time or part-time capacity, with job sharing. Hours will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
The position is for a period of 12 months, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees, with a possibility of further offers subject to funding and need. Membership of a university approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
Remuneration package: up to $63k – $70k p.a. (which includes base salary $53k – $59k p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation)
