Research Assistant

Research Unit/Team:     Youth Psychiatry Research Unit   Project Description and Candidates Role  We are conducting a school based study on risk factors for eating and weight disorders in adolescents.

The RA duties include coordination and implementation of data collection, database management, statistical analysis and preparation of study reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.   Summary of Responsibilities  Under the direction of the Research Unit Director, to provide specialized research support, at various levels of independence, to the Research Unit Director and other research staff.

Major Responsibilities

1.      Research project implementation (40%): Liaise with research collaborators Establish and coordinate logistical arrangements for recruitment and data collection Recruit, instruct, and assess research participants Perform aspects of research protocol, as required Complete proper documentation of research activities and maintenance of research participant records Plan, implement and maintain data collection and analysis systems in support of research protocol Enter data into the database as per the study protocol and procedures Reliably conduct basic or advanced statistical analyses, under guidance from the researcher(s) Assist in monitoring the progress of research activities and preparation of reports, as required by funding agencies and/or regulatory bodies Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned Supervision of undergraduate students and volunteers working on the study

2.      Grant, manuscript, abstract, and presentation preparation (40%): Assist researcher(s) with literature searches of various literature databases and use established, or develop, appropriate search criteria Maintain a database of bibliographic references using appropriate software (e.g., Reference Manager) Assist researchers to ensure compliance with scientific review and research ethics processes; complete relevant application forms and obtain required signatures Identify and conduct appropriate statistical analysis Coordinate, edit, and assist in drafting research protocols, grant applications, reports, abstracts, manuscripts, journal articles Develop or edit research presentations and posters using appropriate software (e.g., PowerPoint)

3.      Research administration (15%): The RA is responsible for coordinating, organizing and supporting all research administrative activities, for a research project.  Organize and maintain confidential research charts, research data and other relevant information Independently respond to research project specific correspondence, telephone and email inquiries

4.      Grant cost centres and other financial activities (5%): Record, monitor and sign for financial  transactions, as authorized Assist researcher(s) and staff members in developing budgets and budget justifications consistent with grantor/contractor eligibility requirements and IMHR policies; liaise with IMHR Administration as necessary

Qualifications  Undergraduate degree in , human or related discipline with 1+ year experience in a clinical/medical research environment OR Masters degree in , human , or related discipline OR Another combination of relevant education and experience Bilingual (French and English) is an asset  Skills & Abilities   Strong expertise in statistics Advanced knowledge of computer programs, including research related and statistical and data analysis software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS or SAS) Superior verbal and written communication skills Experience in conducting internet and literature database searches Self-directed and able to perform duties with minimal supervision Meticulous, detail-oriented, and highly organized Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work within a multidisciplinary team Able to work under pressure and on several projects concurrently

Working knowledge of research related regulations and guidelines, including the Tri-council Policy Statement: Conduct of Research Involving Humans, and the International Conference on Harmonization Good Clinical Practices Knowledge of medical terminology
