The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is a world-class biomedical research institute based in Melbourne, Australia, with a strong history of significant discoveries of clinical importance and an outstanding international reputation.
The Bioinformatics Division (bioinf.wehi.edu.au) is one of Australia’s leading bioinformatics research groups. The division is supported by significant research grant funding and works at the cutting edge of bioinformatics research and data analysis in areas such as statistical genetics (Dr Melanie Bahlo), microarrays (A/Prof. Gordon Smyth), biological sequence analysis (Dr Tony Papenfuss) and comparative and functional genomics (Prof. Terry Speed, Division Head).
A recent focus of the group is on the analysis of cancer “omic” (genomic, epigenomic and transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic) data (under Dr Tony Papenfuss and Prof. Terry Speed).
An opportunity exists for one to two people to join our research team to help develop new computational methods and algorithms for the analysis “omic” data on tumours obtained from next-generation DNA sequencing platforms.
These analyses, done in collaboration with cancer researchers, investigate fundamental processes in cancer and seek novel approaches to cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
The successful applicants will have a PhD, Masters or Honours degree in one of the following areas: statistics, mathematics, computing or biology. Some experience in programming and a keen interest in biology are also required. Strong interpersonal skills are essential.
Applicants are expected to communicate frequently with biological collaborators and must be highly motivated by biological problems. One to two positions are currently available, with appointment level and salary dependent on qualifications and previous experience.
Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available. These positions are available for two years in the first instance. Overseas applicants are very welcome to apply.
Enquiries on the positions can be directed to Dr Tony Papenfuss (papenfuss [at] wehi.edu [.] au). Written applications, including full CV and the names of three professional referees should be forwarded to: Human Resources Manager The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research 1G Royal Parade Parkville Victoria 3050
