Visiting Instructor in Biochemistry

This is a one-year full time Visiting Instructor position in biochemistry to begin fall, 2012.

Qualifications:
Preferred: undergraduate degree in chemistry and a Ph.D. by August 15,
2012 in biochemistry or a closely related area.

Candidates for the position need to
demonstrate an understanding of and a commitment to:
* excellence in classroom and laboratory
teaching at all levels
* developing a strong, externally funded undergraduate research program
(optional)
* teaching chemistry courses within the liberal arts context
* mentoring and
teaching students with diverse academic backgrounds

Teaching Responsibilities:
Primary
teaching responsibilities will be in the introductory chemistry lecture and laboratories. In
addition, the applicant will be expected to teach in our beginning and advanced biochemistry lecture
and labs. While research is not expected for this position, a modest research program will be
acceptable if the successful applicant is interested.

About the Department:
The
Department of Chemistry is comprised of seven fulltime tenured or tenure-track faculty covering all
of the major chemistry subdisciplines, plus a fulltime Director of Laboratories. The chemistry
program graduates approximately 15 chemistry and biochemistry majors each year of which over 50%
enter graduate programs. The Fort Lewis College Chemistry Department routinely ranks in the top few
percent nationally of Bachelor and Master’s-level institutions that produce graduates who go on to
receive their Ph.D. degree. The strength of the chemistry program is centered in its commitment to
excellence in teaching including involving students in quality research. The laboratories are well
equipped with modern instrumentation for teaching and research. Excellent electronic resources are

About the College and the Community:
Fort Lewis College is a state-supported
liberal arts college with its own governing board and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal
Arts Colleges (COPLAC). The Chemistry Department has laboratories and a lecture hall in a modern new
facility and is housed within the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. Total enrollment at the
College is about 3,700 students with 30% multicultural population.

The college primarily
serves the Four Corners region and the State of Colorado but also attracts a significant student
population from throughout the nation. The school is well known regionally for its outdoor
recreation opportunities, premier field schools in archaeology and geology, and its research based
chemistry program. The community of Durango, Colorado, is located in the foothills of the San Juan
Mountains of Southwestern Colorado in the culturally rich and geographically diverse Four Corners
region. Durango has a population of approximately 15,000 and La Plata County has a population of
