Arkansas Tech University (ATU) invites applications for the 12-month full-time position of Department Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Department is to prepare graduates for the demanding requirements of a professional engineer. The dedicated faculty have a sincere interest in the personal and professional development of its approximately 360 students. The Mechanical Engineering Department Head is responsible for implementing university policies and procedures at the department level. The Department Head, who reports to the Dean of the College, works in cooperation with the faculty to ensure quality in educational delivery and compliance with state and national accreditation standards. This is a full-time, twelve-month position. The Department Head is half-time faculty and half-time administration. The Department Head provides key leadership in the hiring process, promotion and tenure decisions, course scheduling, assessment, student recruitment, budgeting, fund-raising, advising, supervision of department staff, and curriculum development. The Department Head also represents the department within the university and their community, and works collegially with faculty, academic program directors, and other administrators. The Department Head must demonstrate precision and organization in executing all necessary position responsibilities and duties, and must have the ability to manage and work with a diverse group of staff, faculty, and administrators. The Department values student learning and scholarly activity, especially as it relates to the enhancement of teaching and its positive impact on students learning through real-world project and research activities.
Required Qualifications: PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aeronautical Engineering (Aerospace); 8 years of Higher Ed Engineering Professor Experience not including TA, GA, or Adjunct Professor duties; Published Journal and National Conference Research Experience beyond their PhD; Administrative experience at the department level; Service experience on university-level committees; Taught junior & senior level mechanical (Aeronautical) Engineering courses; Taught or advised senior-design projects; ABET & assessment experience; Advising experience; Experience in curriculum development
Preferred Qualifications: Experience representing department/institution with external constituencies; Demonstrated oral communication skills beyond the classroom; Experience with department or research budgeting; Grant writing and administration
