GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Tutorial Center at the Petaluma Campus of Santa Rosa Junior College is
seeking qualified individuals with demonstrated mathematics tutoring skills to join an outstanding
team of classified administrators, faculty and staff to provide high quality services to our
district, our community, and most importantly to our students. There are three regular, part-time
(32%), Classified positions. One position will work a 161/171 days per year calendar and the other
two positions will work a 217 days per year calendar. Work schedule will be between Monday through
Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Fridays, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (evenings hours may be
required, so candidates must have scheduling flexibility to meet the changing needs of the
department). Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, perform highly technical and specialized
paraprofessional preparatory work to assist faculty in the instruction of students; demonstrates
theoretical or practical subject matter in a classroom or laboratory setting; may act as lead worker
to other classified staff in the area; and perform related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Demonstrates in-depth theoretical or practical subject matter expertise in a
classroom or laboratory setting; researches background of subject matter and other literature to
maintain current information; assists instructors in implementing classroom or laboratory
assignments; organizes lesson plans and designs, develops, and delivers materials for presentation;
confers with students regarding classroom or laboratory progress; tutors students individually and
in groups on problem areas related to instructional subject matter; administers and scores tests;
confers with instructors and students regarding student test scores; writes reports on classroom or
laboratory activities and/or student progress; may attend departmental and instructional meetings;
organizes special events and completes special projects as assigned; maintains classroom or
laboratory equipment; makes minor repairs and adjustments as necessary; maintains student records,
classroom or laboratory assignments, and other documents in accurate filing system; orders and
maintains supplies; performs administrative duties as required; may serve as a lead worker to other
classified staff within the area or direct the work of student assistants.
SCOPE
The Instructional Assistant, Senior has an in-depth knowledge in the instructional area to
which assigned; responsibilities are discharged with demonstrated expertise and authority.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Instructional Assistant, Senior is distinguished from the
Instructional Assistant by the level of independence and initiative expected of incumbents. This
classification may assist in the development or research of assignments, tests, and instructional
units, and organize and complete special projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Abilities and Knowledge:
Ability to present classroom materials; maintain accurate
records; perform administrative work with accuracy and speed; operate a personal computer;
communicate effectively in English; follow and give oral and written communications; identify
problems and recommend solutions; work independently with a minimum of supervision; maintain
cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse
population.
Knowledge of specific subject matter in area to which assigned; materials, tools, and
equipment to be used in the classroom or laboratory setting; basic computer software programs;
skills in establishing and maintaining effective public relations.
Required Education/Experience:
A community college degree related to the subject area assigned
(Mathematics); OR the equivalent.

Preferred:
* One year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience tutoring, or other work
in a related educational setting
* Ability to tutor math AND tutor in one or more disciplines,
(advanced math preferred, but must be through Intermediate Algebra)
* Experience working with
developmental and college level students
* Willingness to participate in study skills
presentations/training.
CAMPUS DESCRIPTION
The Santa Rosa Junior College Petaluma Campus currently enrolls nearly 6,000
students in credit and non-credit courses day and evening classes. Each semester students enroll in
approximately 375 course sections in sixty disciplines, including all the courses necessary for
transfer to UC, CSU, and completion of the SRJC general education requirements. A second phase of
new construction for the Petaluma Campus was completed in 2008, and a third phase of construction
completed in 2009 renovated the original campus. New facilities included life sciences labs, a
second art studio, physical science and chemistry/physics labs, a new 45,000 square foot library, a
physical fitness center, a bookstore, student services and support areas (including student health
services, student life and leadership, admissions and records, counseling, disabled student
services, tutorial center, and career/transfer center), expanded dining space, classrooms/technology
labs, faculty/administrative offices, digital media lab, and a nearly 300-seat auditorium with some
of the best media technology in the district. The campus offers state-of-the-art technology
throughout, including a wireless network, fully mediated instructional facilities, and
video-conferencing capabilities. The campus is eventually expected to accommodate approximately
12,000 students. This beautiful campus is located 35 miles north of San Francisco and 17 miles south
of Santa Rosa.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The College Skills/Tutorial Department offers developmental math, reading,
and writing classes, most of which include computer-assisted instruction. The department also runs
the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Tutorial Centers. In addition, the department provides noncredit,
open-entry English and bilingual Spanish basic skills labs and classes on both campuses and the
Southwest Santa Rosa Center.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
May be required to possess certain licenses or certificates (i.e., valid
(Class C) California driver’s license, CPR, First Aid certificates), or possess proof of training in
areas relevant to subject matter to which assigned.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
* Salary Range: $19.35 – $23.53 per hour (based on 2011/12 Salary Schedule);
maximum initial placement at $21.34 per hour (placement within this range is based on assessment of
previous experience as documented in application materials). The salary listed above has been
adjusted by 5% for a mandatory time off reduction for the 2011/12 year. If applicable, a shift
differential will be applied as defined by the SEIU Contract, Article 6.
* Fringe Benefits: The
District offers a competitive health benefits package for employees and eligible dependents
(benefits are pro-rated for part-time employees). These positions do not qualify for health
benefits.
* Leave/Holiday time: Full-time classified members earn 8 hours of sick leave and start
off accruing 6.67 hours of vacation for each month worked (accrual rate increases after third year
of employment and rates are pro-rated for part-time employees). Employees are also compensated for
holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year, pro-rated for part-time employees).
