The ultimate science career site

The New Indian Express Says…

From Express News Service
Nothing can be more painful in the cyberspace than looking for a career option in science, browsing around from one University website to another.

Not only painful but terribly time-consuming too. The answer to the problem is www.thesciencejobs.com.

A website that helps you find jobs. A website that helps you find an appropriate post-doctoral fellowship placement. A website that lets you know of all the important workshops and conferences related to science happening across the world. This is definitely a website that should be part of elementary knowledge to science graduates, post-graduates, research fellows and anyone looking for a career in science.

It was launched from our own city of Ananthapuri by Thripthi Krishnamohan residing at Vellayambalam, herself a student of Aerobiology. When her husband K.K. Sabu was looking for a job abroad after his post-doctoral fellowship in Malaysia, they had a tough time browsing from one university to the other. “That’s when I hit upon the idea of creating such a website. It is nearly impossible to find job sites that give importance to jobs in the life science area,” said Thripthi.

Among the universities that directly publish their vacancies on the site include the University of Massachusetts, Michigan State University, Wright State University, Institute of Groundwater Ecology-Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen, Germany
, Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), Belgium Umea University, Sweden, University of Bristol, UK, University of California, Cawthron Institute, New Zealand, The Institute for Bird Populations, USA, Medical Research Council (MRC), UK, University of Zurich, Switzerland, and the USDA Forest Service.

Apart from these, there are regular staff members monitoring vacancies that come up in Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany and Japan. Thripthi herself monitors the ones that arise in India, USA, UK, Ireland, Netherlands and the rest of the world. She even writes articles on how to prepare the resume, how to prepare for an interview and so on.

“We also keep a tab on the major happenings in science across the world. For example, right now at our site, you can get details of the International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Technology that is to be held at Singapore from April 17 to April 19,” she said.

The revenue, though meagre, comes from ads posted on the site by Google.

“We have a deal with Google. We arrange a platform for their ads and they post advertisements that match our site,” said Thripthi.

But the slow revenue inflow has not dampened her spirits. Thripthi is now going ahead with a writing competition for Ph.D students. Any research student can write articles related to their research field, one per month for a year and the best 12 get a prize. “Even our website visitors get a chance to evaluate the articles. So don’t forget to visit our site,” she said. Direct link to Article
